Rob + Catherine {Married} l Nags Head / Outer Banks Wedding Photographer

Monday, April 25th, 2011

I’m actually blogging their photos a little backwards, and starting with the “Day After” session.

Rob & Catherine were, hands down, one of the sweetest couples I’ve ever worked with. Like many of my wedding couples, they booked me without ever meeting me in person. I headed over to their rental cottage after they got into town to say hello and check things out. They had their family with them, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. You could tell they were so excited to here in Nags Head celebrating Rob & Catherine’s wedding. We were blessed with some beautiful Outer Banks weather, and aside from some wind, it was a great week.

Catherine is just one of those women you can instantly be friends with. It’s no secret my favorite part of a wedding are the bride and groom portraits. Well, my second favorite would have to be “getting ready”. I love the details, I love the chaos, and I love the sweet moments that happen in those last few minutes before a couple says ” I Do”. Just before the ceremony we shooed everyone out of the room for a few last minute photos of Catherine alone. She sat down to open her gift from Rob and it was probably one of the best moments I’ve gotten to be a part of at a wedding. Inside the wrapping was a picture frame that contained a photo of the two of them, and the receipt from the restaurant on their first date. To think, he’d saved it all this time. He must have known then this would be the girl for him! As she opened the second part of the gift it was a large book. Rob has designed it himself, and it was full of photos of the two of them over the years. Just watching Catherine look through that book, telling me where the different photos were taken – I was teary eyed. Then it happend. Catherine closed the book, took a deep breath, and exclaimed: “I love that man!”. And then the tears came – yes, I cried.

So now on to the good stuff. We met up a couple days later for a  ”Day After” session. This time of year leaves us with windy weather, but luckily it wasn’t that cold and we were able to get some beautiful and relaxed images of the two of them.

Justin & Ashely {Day After} l Outer Banks Wedding Photographer l OBX Wedding Photography

Justin & Ashley were troopers as they watched the rain fall on their wedding day. They really wanted photos on the beach, and lucky for us the next day called for sun. They got dressed up again, and met me at Coquina Beach for some “Day After” photos. Bless them, because it was C.O.L.D. Ashley was so smart, and after getting out of the car lifted the hem of her dress to show the leggings she had put on to help stay warm. Smart girl! We started out at the beach, and then headed across the street to the Bodie Island Lighouse. The lighthouse itself is under scaffolding, but the grounds are great for photographing.

About five shots in, Justin realized that he’d lost his wedding ring. Not kidding. We piled in the car and drove back across to the beach to look. We were ALL over that beach during pictures, and honestly, I thought the odds of finding it were super slim. Needle in a haystack anyone? I was in serious shock when after about two minutes I look up to see Justin running down the beach…..low and behold there was his ring sitting on the hard  packed sand. They were truly blessed! The whole time Ashley was as calm as could be, a true testament to the type of person she is. Most brides would have been in hysterics over a lost wedding ring – after only being married for 24 hours. Wedding ring in hand back we headed back over to the lighthouse we went to finish up the session.

I prayed for nice weather to grace us on Justin & Ashley’s wedding day. Unfortunately, mother nature didn’t hear me and we were left with rain. :( They were troopers, and made the best of it. Luckily, everything was taking place inside – with the ceremony at Still Waters Baptist Church. Still, I know they were bummed watching the rain fall instead of being on the beach taking photos. They had their wonderful friends and family to share the day with, and a lovely reception with great food and dancing!

John & Ti-Ying {Day After Session} l Outer Banks Wedding Photographer l OBX Wedding Photography

Monday, March 21st, 2011

John & Ti-Ying joined me a couple days after their wedding for a “Day After” session. These sessions are growing in popularity, because it allows the couples to get dressed back up and have wedding photos taking in an alternate location. It also allows them to spend less time after the ceremony, and without the stress of having to rush to the reception. To mix things up a bit from their Duck beach wedding, we chose the Whalehead Club in Corolla for their day after session. They were troopers, despite the wind and colder temps that crept up on us. The grounds were fairly empty, and left us with a lot of space to work with. I had a great time photographing both you guys, CONGRATS!!!

OBX Snow Day Portraits : take two l Outer Banks Portrait Photographer

So after doing my session with Mallory, I did a quick and fun session with my super adorable little sister and one of her friends. I love our sessions – it’s great “girl time” and she fills me in all the important things going on in her life. Let’s just say after an afternoon with her I know everything that’s going on in the 6th grade….it’s a blessing and curse. ;) We stayed at the Island Farm, and moved around a bit for some different looks. They even both wore their cute rubber boots. If you know me, you know that I’m a sucker for rubber boots…..LOVE LOVE LOVE my rubber boots. Seriously, I wear them even when it’s not raining…and I’m a dork and wear my jeans tucked IN them. I’m pretty sure the kids still think I’m cool, because the girls showed up with their pants tucked into their boots too. We finished up our session with lunch at Poor Richards, a local favorite for sandwiches, where I was got to hear all the code names for the cute boys in class.

Who says we don’t get snow at the beach? Well, if you’d asked me a couple of years ago if we got snow at the beach I’d say “heck no”. The reality is we might see a some flurries every few years but never anything substantial. This year has been crazy in the weather department here at the beach. Throughout the off-season and winter, clients will send me emails just to say hello – and inevitably they ask how the weather is. This year it seemed like my answer was always, “it’s snowing….again”. Yes my friends, we had around 4 or 5 (I’ve really lost count at this point) snowfalls this winter. It all started with a light dusting in early December. What? December? We had several more after that. For all of them I stayed inside, nice and warm snuggled up with my doggie. We finally had what I think will be our last snowfall this winter a couple of weeks ago. As soon as it finished snowing I decided to jump at the chance to do an impromptu snow session.

Insert Mallory and her sweet dog Molly. I’ve known Mallory since preschool – that’s one of the perks of living in a small town. Now we’re all grown up, and Mallory is engaged. What’s a post about old friends without a trip down memory lane? Wanna good laugh? Here’s a VERY old dance photo, I’m going to guess we were around 3 or 4? You can see me (looking thrilled) on the far left kneeling in the front – Mallory is on the far right kneeling in the front. :) I’m pretty sure I had the same haircut as my mom! Really…Mallory only has herself to blame for this seeing as how she put the incriminating photo on Facebook to begin with! :D

So now on to the good stuff….

Emily & Toby : Engaged | Outer Banks Wedding & Engagement Photographer

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Emily and Toby are getting hitched…..next weekend. We did their session last month, and I’m just now getting it up on the blog.

Emily and I share several mutual friends, and Toby is the cousin of one  of my May brides, Gretchen. I love when I work with families multiple times, because you really do get to know everyone. We tried for a couple of weeks to fit in their session, but between schedules and rain we were starting to think it might just not happen. Luckily we finally had some great weather, and a change of locations, and we were good to go. As most people here on the Outer Banks, our lives revolve around the water  - and that’s definitely true for Toby, who runs his own charter boat business. We chose Pirate’s Cove for our location, and it really fit.

Congrats guys and I’m looking forward to next weekend!

Rudolph Family | Outer Banks Family Beach Portraits

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

I had the opportunity to photograph this great family at their house in Duck. We had some dark clouds looming on our session, and felt the need to really make it fast. We got through the whole session and back to the house JUST as the sky let out. It was a pretty quick rain storm and we were able to get a few more shots of the beautiful evening sky after the rain stopped.

Ceremony – Saint Andrews By The Sea

Reception – NC Aquarium – Roanoke Island

Catering – Basnight’s Lone Cedar Cafe

Cake – OBX Cakes By Robin

DJ – Astro Entertainment

Rachel & Pat had a fabulous wedding surrounded by family and friends on what turned out to be a beautiful day. Rachel grew up here on the Outer Banks and I know all of their guests were trilled to be a part of their special day. They started with a beautiful ceremony is the quaint chapel at Saint Andrew’s, followed by an awesome reception at the Aquarium on Roanoke Island. The Aquarium is such a unique location and is a wedding favorite among brides. The best part is that entire Aquarium is open for the guests to walk through during cocktail hour and throughout the reception. What a fun way to pass the time while the couple has their photos than drinking a glass of wine while watching the Otters swim and the kids amazed over the stingrays in the touch-tank. The crew at Lone Cedar did a great job as always with the food, and Robin with Great Cakes outdid herself again.

Congrats Rachel & Pat!!!!

Gretchen & Melvin ❘ Belhaven, NC Wedding Photographer

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Last week I traveled to Belhaven, NC to photograph the fabulous wedding of Gretchen & Melvin. These two are so adorable together, and their wedding was totally awesome! They had some of the most fun family and friends I’ve seen at a wedding, and it was wonderful to see a whole town take part in the festivities in one way or another. Their reception kept me on my toes, and Mevlin (along with everyone else) was so entertaining a lot of times I wasn’t sure I would be able to shoot through all my laughter.

Gretchen made a beautiful bride – Melvin is a lucky man!

Congrats guys…enjoy your little teaser until the gallery is live!
